Back in Action

For another Pottery Barn look alike

Woah, We have had a crazy couple of months and my blogging life got shoved to the back of the closet with all the other projects I love! Finally got it pulled out and dusted off, and hope to be back in action! We have soooo many exciting things going on and I hope to do some post about all of that excitement very soon!

Today I will start with my pair of small dressers the Ugly Duckling Twins! My grandma purchased these at a garage sale for $5 a piece, proof bargain shopping is genetic! They have been traveling around with me for the past 8 years, 3 states, and 7 homes, proof hoarding is genetic ;). The past couple of years has been hard on these girls and they needed a facelift! So I set them up on a date with my new boyfriend AKA the belt sander (best $50 spent this month), in love! My husband is concerned.

I started by pulling these ladies out on our patio and wiped them down. I didn’t get too crazy as I new my boyfriend would do the heavy work. I then unscrewed all of the knobs, pulled out the drawers, put my headphones in, and sanded away. I started with a course medium grit sand paper on the belt sander, then used a fine grit sandpaper by hand to smooth everything out.

Few rules I learned about the belt sander:

1. Course could sand the metal off a car in 2.5 seconds its a little extreme and leaves little room for errors

2. Sand with the grain of the wood

3. Sand off anything that is pealing, or it will peal later

4. Move the belt sander and try not to push too hard or you will leave grooves and dents

5. Let the sander do the work, and say good by to your bingo wings

Once sanding was completed I splurged and got paint and primer in one (antique white) for $9 a quart at Menards, worth every penny. I have been cheap for years buying primer then paint, and finally have learned it just isn’t worth it for most projects. I also had some Floetrol from a previous project, this stuff is fantastic. Some nice gentleman at Menards recommended it and I could just hug this guy. You just follow the directions on the container, it prolongs drying time, and helps paint dry without roller spots or brush strokes. With a brush I just painted away, pretty simple stuff!

Drawer Pulls

For the pulls I knew the old wood painted ones needed to go, and I love the look of the oil rubbed metal but hated the price $5-6 per pull, no way! I ended up finding these pulls for $2 on clearance, but clearly the color didn’t match my antique white pottery barn wannabe look.

I used the same technique for these that I used in this post. first I sprayed these with a layer of Rust-oleum metallic in Bronze. Then I went over it with a light coat of FLAT black, before it dries I use a paper towel to rub some off. I continued this technique until I got the desired affect. Here is the final project complete. I know I keep talking about these as a pair, but confession I still need to add the knobs to the second dresser. Their first new home will be on each side of our bed as night stands!

Can’t believe I forgot to mention I pulled off the retro legs and exchanged for these gorgeous things! I also Found similar dressers at pottery barn priced at $800-$1000 each!

Easy Naturally Curly Hair Look

I have naturally stick straight hair! not in a super model attractive way like this:

But the suction to my head no volume, boring, flat way. I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but I LOVE big hair. I should have been born in the sixties kind of love! I am a huge fan of hot rollers, my curling iron, and my teasing comb. Last weekend I was surfing the web and came across the most amazing blog. She is a hair and  make up genius! I tried her natural curl technique for an easy style that lasted several days! She was inspired by Megan Fox on this one, and who doesn’t want to look like that hot chick.

I also have fallen in love with her gorgeous long hair, and since I have not had a descent hair cut since last summer I am well on my way. She also has some great tips to keep your hair healthy without rockin’ the boring look everyday!

When I tried this I did not have use all of the same products that she used.

Products I used:

1. Big Sexy Root Booster $15

2. Moroccan Moisture  $4

3. Got 2b Curling Mousse $6

4. Bed Head Hairspray $16

For the past couple of weeks I have been using product 1 and 2 after I wash my hair and letting it air dry. I honestly can tell a huge difference, my hair is less frizzy, but has more root volume. For this style I added the curling mousse to my hair, then twisted section into buns, secured with a hair band, then slept with them in.  Ps if you do this be careful where you place your buns I am a side sleeper and had buns on both sides, but it was totally worth it. When I woke up I took them out starting with the bottom section and used the blow dryer with a diffuser on it to dry them up. I also used a 1 inch barrel curling iron to polish any kinks. I made sure to curl with an iron right at my crown around my part. As you can see in the second picture I should have rotated which way I twisted the curling iron on my sides. Polished with this hair spray, and tada! My husband even said, “wow babe, it looks like you have natural curls.” He scored some brownie points with that line, he is a smart man! Bonus it last 2-3 days.

Sew Many Buttons So Little Time

A few weeks back I was back to that little town full of great antique shops, the one where I got this lamp. I went down their creepy old wooden steps, into their creepy wet basement. This place is straight from a horror movie, it even has the random doors you don’t want to open. Creepiness aside I found two antique mason jars plum full of buttons marked $5 a piece. What, of course I snatched those babies up!

When I got home I was crazy busy with all of the holiday activities, and honestly had no time to get creative. My poor little guy did have a few sick days in there, and while he was on the couch I sorted them by color. I am a weirdo like that, I must have my buttons and clothes organized by color, but I can tolerate counters covered with clutter, and clothes on my closet floor. My husband loves to joke that it gets knee-deep in there.

Tonight I had the glorious opportunity to put my feet up with a glass of wine and peruse pinterest for button ideas! There are literally endless opportunities, and my ten bucks is going to go a long way.

Chocolate Covered Sunday

It has been a crazy whirlwind of a week. To be honest I have been quite the sassy Cassie. I was stuck in a funk for several days this week. Ugh I hate those funks. Fridays events just pushed me over the edge. I cannot grasp how a person could do such a thing to anyone, but especially children. My heart breaks for all of the families that were touched be this event.

I had a great balance this weekend between having some “Cassie time” and spending time with my amazing family. I am so blessed between my wonderful family, and the amazing ladies I work with everyday. They are all angels for putting up with this Sassy lady all week. I am sure many of them thought of shoving me in a broom closet for the weekend!

I have gotten a lot of things accomplished, during my self assigned time out 😉 . I finished all of my christmas shopping and today had a Chocolate Covered Sunday. YUM! I also made a few other items that were not covered in chocolate.

6 Outfits

I have not done a fun outfit post in a while, so why not do six at once! Whenever I buy something new, I love to run home and start pulling out things I could wear it with. I have heard there is a new app for the iphone that will do this for you (how amazing is that), too bad I am an android girl ;(. I am really no fashion queen by anymeans, but I have discovered layers make the world of difference! You can jazz up something boring or simmer down that loud shirt you got last christmas just by layering it up! All of these outfits stem from my miss me jeans, purple ruffled shirt, and a simple black T.

Confession: My other guilty pleasure is a good pair of jeans! I am so cheap when it comes to most things, but a good pair of jeans is worth every penny! They fit better, wash better, and last longer. Jeans are an investment, and for the most part they are timeless. These specific ones are Miss Me, I love that they have the higher rise for us moms, but still have fun washes/pocket styles. I also love BKE, Silvers, and Love the comfort of Big Stars, but found they are not as durable.

Here we have some comfy black outfits! On the left: I wore this one for a comfy shopping day with my mom. I love wearing comfy clothes to shop so it is easy to try things on! On the far left I dressed it up a little bit with my bossy boots. Middle: I sucked it in with this fitted vest, would be great for a casual friday at the office.
